In nearly every team I work with, testers are motivated, curious, and willing to learn accessibility. But they run into systemic barriers that make real accessibility testing almost impossible. Here are the patterns that show up again and again — and small changes that unblock them.
1) No shared “definition of done” for accessibility
Without a DoD, everyone has their own interpretation of “accessible”. Developers build according to assumptions; testers test according to guesswork. A simple, team-owned DoD immediately aligns expectations.
2) Inconsistent components and behaviours
A button behaves one way on page A, another way on page B, and a third inside the design system. Accessibility testing depends on predictability. Lock patterns in the system; reduce drift.
3) Automation is treated as the strategy
Automation is great triage, but it can’t explain impact or meaning. Give testers patterns, not just error lists — and pair automation with a short manual pass on real flows.
4) No time allocated for real user flows
You can check a login flow in 5–10 minutes; you cannot validate an entire experience in the last half hour before release. Add tiny accessibility checkpoints inside sprints, not panic at the end.
5) Teams lack a shared accessibility vocabulary
Designers talk contrast; developers talk ARIA; testers talk screen readers; product talks standards. Create a shared glossary and show “what good looks like” with two or three component examples.
What helps testers succeed
- Predictable components from the design system
- 5–6 reliable checks that fit inside sprint boundaries
- A clear definition of done
- Examples of “good” behaviour (video/gif or step notes)
- A workflow for reporting issues that developers can act on
When the environment supports them, testers become accessibility accelerators.
